At the beginning this ability was naively confused with the knowledge of arithmetic operations, then stratagems were sought to teach how to solve, then there was a focus on the linguistic aspects, then on the logical ones... And the story goes on. This book takes stock, offers analyzes based on real classroom situations, especially in primary school, taking into consideration psychological, pedagogical, above all didactic aspects, with the hope of offering mathematics teachers a concrete, effective tool for understanding what goes wrong when the student is unsuccessful in solving a problem. Bruno D'Amore has a degree in mathematics, philosophy and pedagogy, PhD in Mathematics Education, honorary PhD in Social Sciences and Education; he was full professor of mathematics education at the University of Bologna; currently dictates seminars and directs PhD thesis in the DIE, at the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas, Bogota, Colombia. He conceived and still directs: the Nucleus of Research in Mathematics Education of Bologna, the national conference Incontri con la Matematica which has been held for 28 years in Castel San Pietro Terme, the research and dissemination magazine Mathematics and its teaching.
